How often should you vacuum?
Once a week for a home without pets, twice for the rooms you actually live in. Every day or two if there is a pet, a baby crawling, or someone with allergies.
It depends on four things
- Pets: hair and dander land daily, so every day or two in the rooms they use.
- Shoes indoors: shoes carry in most of the grit that wears out a carpet.
- Allergies or asthma: twice a week, with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter.
- Carpet or hard floors: carpet hides dirt and needs more passes; hard floors show it and need fewer.
Not every room needs the same
The hall, the kitchen and wherever you sit take almost all of the traffic. A spare room used twice a month does not need a weekly pass. Splitting it this way turns vacuuming from an hour into ten minutes most weeks.
What actually helps more
A doormat inside and outside, and shoes off at the door. That removes most of the dirt before it reaches the floor, and it is the single biggest change a household can make. After that, a robot on the days between, if you have one.
While you are there
Empty the bin or change the bag before it is full, because suction drops long before it looks full. Wash or replace the filter every three months, and check the brush roll for hair once a month if anyone in the house has long hair.
